Buying your first home can feel overwhelming. There are many moving parts, and getting everything together takes time. It all starts with understanding the process. My biggest advice? Connect with a professional realtor who can guide you from start to finish. From there, create a plan and take it one step at a time. Stay informed, ask questions, and just start, that first step matters more than you think.

I remember when I first started thinking about buying a home. One thing was clear then and still is today: location matters. Your home should match your current lifestyle but also support where you’re headed. Taking time to explore different areas is so important because at the end of the day, you want to feel comfortable where you live. Everyone’s priorities differ, but location is always the foundation. Having a local expert on your side helps you make a confident and informed decision.
I had a client who was set on Richardson. We saw newer homes in other areas, but she kept coming back to what she knew. It wasn’t just a city to her, it was home. Her favorite local spots were there, her work was nearby, and it’s where she had built her life. I remember asking her, “Why Richardson?” She told me she loved the charm—smaller homes with character. And that right there is what real estate is about. It’s not always about the newest or biggest home—it’s about what feels right for you.
Finances are the next big piece. One of the most common questions I get is, “How much do I need to save?” If you’re not paying cash, you’ll likely be using a loan. A good rule of thumb is to have around 6% of the purchase price saved. This usually covers closing costs (about 3%) and a down payment (another 3%, depending on the loan). Lenders will also look at your job stability, how long you’ve been working and your income to determine approval. And of course, your credit score plays a big role in your loan options.

Buying your first home doesn’t have to be stressful or confusing. With the right guidance, a solid plan, and the right mindset, it can actually be a really exciting process. Starting early, staying informed, and surrounding yourself with the right people makes all the difference.
If you’ve been thinking about buying but don’t know where to start, this is your sign. Whether you’re ready now or just exploring, I’m here to guide you every step of the way and help you make the best decision for your future.
